The Regional Center for Central and Eastern Europe was established in the Spring of 2003 as the first area-specific center of PROPHE: Program for Research on Private Higher Education. PROPHE is located at SUNY (State University of New York), Albany and directed by Daniel C. Levy, Distinguished Professor at SUNY. PROPHE is a non-partisan global network promoting scholarly research on private higher education world-wide that, in turn, should inform public discussion and policymaking.

PROPHE's Regional Center for Central and Eastern Europe focuses on the study of the recent growth and proliferation of private institutions of higher education in countries of Central and Eastern Europe and former Soviet republics. The Center's main objectives are:

  • creation of a network of scholars with a research focus on private higher education in the region of Central and Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet republics interested in exchanging ideas and collaborating on research projects in the field;

  • data collection on private higher education in the region of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics as a contribution to PROPHE's efforts to collate, analyze and disseminate information on private higher education world-wide.

PROPHE's Regional Center for Central and Eastern Europe is headed by Snejana Slantcheva and is seated in the town of Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The Center's partners come from different Central and Eastern European countries, former Soviet republics, Western Europe and the USA.
